Martin Kaymer confident to defend his title at PGA Championship
Martin Kaymer aims to defend his title at the 93rd edition of PGA Championship, which will take place at the Atlanta Athletic Club from August 11 to 14, 2011.
World number three Kaymer won the PGA Championship last year after defeating Bubba Watson in a play-off match. This year, he aims to match the back-to-back win record made by Tiger Woods in 1999-2000 and 2006-2007.
He revealed his intentions during an interview held in Atlanta. The 26-year-old said, “It's a big week for me to defend my first major. It will be interesting.”
Kaymer won his first major on Whistling Straits, which was a link-styled course, but this year he will tee off on Atlantic Athletic Club, which is known for long pars, a dense rough and scorching heat.
Commenting on the course conditions, Kaymer said, “It's a very difficult course, very long and very tight. I think that there won't be a lot of low scores.”
Kaymer predicts that the winner will be the one who would compile a score of single digit below par, as the course has been renovated and lengthened.
Despite that, the German is confident that he will be able to walk to the winner’s podium. According to him, his swings had lost their speed and accuracy in the past few months, but lately, he could see a lot of improvement in them.
The winner of Race to Dubai Rankings said while commenting on his form, “I'm feeling OK about my game. It can become really good all of a sudden or it can be OK, but it's not going to be really bad. I'm on a very good way to win again, I just need to be
patient. I'm not playing worse or better than last year.”
Kaymer has not been out of form lately. He was a failure on the link-styled courses of Europe and a disaster at American courses. However, despite his inconsistent form the player seems confident of a title defense. Whether or not he will be able to pull
that off remains to be seen.
