Martin Kaymer counting his chances to become the World Number one at Wells Fargo Championship
Martin Kaymer is not bothered about the rankings, but he is ready to re-conquer the World Number one rank with the Wells Fargo Championship standing on the door of the Professional Golf Association Tour.
The German stepped off his throne a week ago, when Lee Westwood won the Indonesian Masters on the Asian and Ballantine’s Championship on the European tour. With dual victories in the feast, Westwood over threw Kaymer and resurged. But with another opportunity
knocking at the door, Kaymer is hopeful of once again stepping up in the run.
He said, “Every week you have four or five guys up there. Anything can happen week to week and I think that is a great thing that we have in golf at the moment."
At the same time, he added, “It’s enjoyable to have that challenge every week, and if I become the No. 1 soon again, I wouldn't mind it. You get a little bit more attention. Obviously people were looking at my score a bit closer, but besides that, yeah,
I enjoyed that time.”
Kaymer is right when he says that anything can happen. Looking at the changes in the Official World Golf Rankings, one sees it changing for the fourth time since October, when Tiger Woods stepped down. Woods held the rank for five consecutive years until
Westwood proved to the world he was worth it and took over. Three months later, Kaymer won the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship and became the second German after Bernhard Langer to possess the throne.
The 25-year-old held it for eight weeks until Westwood won dual titles and once again took the ownership of the title.
However, this week the battle is once again on for the title and Kaymer is up for it. With Westwood, Tiger Woods, Graeme McDowell and Luke Donald not playing in the tournament, the German is seeing an opportunity to strike. Despite the open ground, the player
has certain weaknesses that came to the surface, when he stepped onto American soil. The player had a problem with hard greens, as he was accustomed to the soft ones. In addition to that, his long game failed him miserably, which is one of the prerequisites
to win on American courses.
