Martin Kaymer eager to tee-off at the star-studded BMW PGA Championship this week
Top-ranked German player Martin Kaymer is keen to start his bid in this week’s BMW PGA Championship which has lured in one of the strongest fields of the year.
Currently ranked number 11th on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR), Kaymer was at the top of the OWGR at the beginning of 2011 and has now slumped due to his sloppy performance since the start of the year.
Regardless of his lingering form vows, Kaymer insists that he has done well in the event at Wentworth in the past and still holds the capability of jolting into contention over the weekend.
He said, “Obviously this is the biggest tournament that we play on The European Tour. I've done fairly okay in the past”.
Being a major winner himself, Kaymer will be facing a stringent opposition which includes 14 players who have gone over to win a major in their career.
Also part of the field, are the top three on the OWGR that includes Rory McIlroy, Luke Donald and Lee Westwood.
He added, “It's a world-class field, a lot of guys from America came over. It's nice that Luke and Rory, they are here. There are a lot of World Ranking points. So it's a very big week and important week for us”.
The 27-year-old German has been fighting form vows since the start of the season where he missed the halfway cut at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in January, which was once a favourite hunting ground of the lanky German.
He was able to make the halfway cut in the Masters for the first time in his career but still finished well below on the leaderboard.
He has never been able to make the cut at the sprawling Augusta National before.
Kaymer became only the second German in the history of the sport to surge to the top of the OWGR after legendary Bernhard Langer.
In a country which remains predominantly a Formula One and Tennis country, Kaymer has struggled to acquire recognition in his short but stellar career.
He is also the only German player to win a major title, the PGA Championship in 2010 after Langer.
