Martin Kaymer eager to win another major, The US Open
The fire brand German golfer, and winner of last year’s PGA Championship, Martin Kaymer is all set to launch his bid for the 111th US Open here at Congressional Country Club near Washington.
Kaymer has one of the few German golfers who have come out to earn laurels for the country which is overwhelmingly dominated by the Formula 1 and Tennis. Former world number one, Kaymer is currently ranked number three in the world rankings and will tee off in a group which constitutes the other two top players in the world. Kaymer, however, is little intimidated.
“Obviously I haven’t seen the last Opens that you played here, I was too young to see that,” said the 26-year-old. “I will go out later and play nine holes today, probably maybe 18 tomorrow and then I think I’ll try to get ready for Thursday, only try to rest a little bit, practice and get ready for everything.”
Kaymer, despite his many top finishes in the season, failed to make the cut at Masters in April when he opted to make eleventh hour swing changes which did not work. He has always shown his dislike for Augusta for unknown reasons and vows to bounce back at the Congressional this week, although he acknowledges the fact that the Blue Course at Congressional will be one of the toughest this week.
The golfer added, “Obviously it will be always a long week, very tiring, because the golf course is so tough.”
Kaymer also disclosed his approach technique he often incorporates towards a certain tournament and said that he takes every event as a normal professional title and never indulges into week long practice rounds on the scheduled venue.
“I was never that kind of person who comes to the golf course a week before or comes two or three months before to play it, you know. I just do my normal routine, come here on Monday, practice for two or three days and get ready,” he said.
Turning professional in 2005, Kaymer has bagged 17 professional titles in his short career, with nine of them coming on the European Tour. He missed the cut in all the four Masters bids he has ever appeared in.
2010 turned out to be the most prolific year for the young golfer when he finished tied for eighth in the US open at Pebbles Beach and tied for seventh in The Open Championship and later won the PGA Championship.
Kaymer will also be coming with a handicap of having a new caddie on his bag who is none other than Luke Donald’s brother, Christian Donald. Kaymer and his former Caddie parted ways some three weeks back.
