Martin Kaymer enjoyed hosting his first Champions Dinner
Martin Kaymer, the defending champion of the PGA Championship, served a Christmas menu in the scorching heat of August at Champions Dinner.
The young German, who made it big last year after defeating Bubba Watson in a play-off at Whistling Straits, decided to serve a traditional German Christmas meal at the Champions Dinner. For those who have no clue as to what a Champions Dinner is, it is
an event hosted by the defending champion of the PGA Championship –Kaymer in this case– and he also gets to choose the menu for the dinner. All past major winners are invited to the dinner, which is scheduled on Tuesday night.
Since Kaymer had the privilege of being the host, he chose to serve goose, knodel and red cabbage at the dinner.
“I looked it up on Internet and it said dumpling, but it’s not really dumpling, it’s different. You just don’t have it here. But I heard the people liked it last night,” said Kaymer about his main course.
Following the tradition, Kaymer asked the last two winners on PGA Championship, David Toms and Phil Mickelson, to share their memories from their wins.
Toms, who won the tournament at Atlanta in 2001, talked about the last round in which he defeated Mickelson, who was the defending champion. He narrated a story of a little girl, who was backing Mickelson. She screamed at Toms saying, “Phil will get you,
Phil will get you.” Toms got offended to the point that he asked his caddie to get her out of the view to get his focus back in the game.
Commenting on his first experience of attending the Champions Tour, Kaymer said that he loved it. For him, the best part of being a major winner was that one could attend the event for eternity.
Kaymer gifted a Swiss army knife to all the major winners and a beauty case to their wives as souvenirs, which was one of many traditions at the dinner.
On the whole, the 26-year-old host enjoyed his first dinner and said that he felt privileged to host all the former major winners.
