Martin Kaymer finally speaks of his colossal loss in Abu Dhabi and blames his short game
Once rampaging German, Martin Kaymer, hailed as the undisputed king of Abu Dhabi, has finally spoken of his gruesome loss at his favourite hunting ground this year, where he missed the cut, not winning the event for the second time in last five years.
Kaymer’s success at Abu Dhabi has often surprised the critics for he has won the title three times in the last four years, only once losing it to settle for the runner-up place.
His opening round this year denied him the halfway cut and the lanky German had to face embarrassment for not even going beyond halfway.
He made a strong comeback in the following event, the Qatar Masters, finishing for a joint eighth and believes that he needs to work on his short game to avoid such blistering embarrassment in the future.
He said, “Obviously in Abu Dhabi the expectations were very high. I've been very successful there, and I didn't really start off the way I wanted, but last week in Qatar was a lot better. I had a lot of chances, especially on the weekend. It could have been a lot better result in the end. It's just a matter of time that I will score very good scores again, so I just need to wait”.
Kaymer surged to the top of the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) at the start of the previous season.
However, he has been poised at the fourth position for a considerably long period of time and his Qatar Masters performance saved him from sliding further down the list.
He became the second German after Bernhard Langer to rise to the top of the OWGR when he won his Semi-final round at WGC Accenture Match Play Championship last year.
He lost to Luke Donald in the final round and was later dethroned from the top by Lee Westwood, who managed to summit the rankings yet again.
The 27-year-old German admits that there is still room for improvement in his short game on the greens and revealed that he is working with his coach regarding the same.
He stated, “I really want to win again, and I think the only thing that was distracting me from winning was my putting”.
Kaymer insists that Dubai suits him even more than Abu Dhabi and has done his homework to improve his short game for the moment.
He said that he has been practicing with his coach all day yesterday and will go around taming some greens this afternoon (Wednesday).
Kaymer won twice in the last season and pulled in some strong finishes to retain his position on the OWGR. He won the Race to Dubai Money list in 2010, primarily because of his stellar victory at the PGA Championship.
