Martin Kaymer fires back into form with runner-up finish at Omega European Masters – Golf news
Germany’s top contemporary golfer, Martin Kaymer has finally decided to come out of obscurity to regain his top form he once held at the start of the year. The 26-year-old posted a runner-up finish at the Omega European Masters last week, to move up the
Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) and is now poised at Number Three on the list, one step ahead of US Open champion, Rory McIlroy.
Kaymer pulled in a final round of 65, at the picturesque Crans-Sur-Sierre, Switzerland, to finish four shots behind winner, Thomas Bjorn.
In February, Kaymer soared to Number One in the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) at the start of the season when he posted a runner-up finish at the World Golf Championship Accenture Match Play Championship in Tucson, Arizona. He was later dethroned by
Lee Westwood in successive events following that. Kaymer will be hoping to continue with his fine form for the moment to retain the KLM Open title he won last year.
“If definitely feels like I will win again in the next couple of weeks,” said Kaymer. “I’m hitting the ball very well. I like the golf course, Hilversumsche, and it is nice that I can drive there from home. It’s only two hours away and it’s nice to have
your own car.”
The soft-spoken German has been a phenomenal player so far in his career and has displayed amazing psychological strength on a number of occasions to surge to his current status. Winner of the PGA Championship last year, he overtook rampaging Bubba Watson
in a nail-biting Playoff to win his first major title. This year’s KLM Open is bound to be the toughest challenge in its 92 years of history, where top-three players in the world will be pitched in a tight battle for the first time.
“I’m defending in the KLM Open this week where I’ve won before and then I’m defending in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship and I’m playing well at the moment so I’m hoping for a strong end to the season,” he said.
A nine-time European Tour winner, Kaymer had a blistering season last year where he won three events including the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, the KLM Open and the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship. He returned to retain the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship
title at the start of the current year but was not able to win any of the proceeding events after that.
Kaymer turned professional in 2005 and has since been a stellar player on the European Tour circuit. He missed the cut at the two major championships this year including the Masters at Augusta and the PGA Championship last month, but has somehow managed
to remain in top-five on the OWGR. Kaymer often draws comparisons with the great German golfer, Bernhard Langer, who has inspired a whole generation of German youth which otherwise have been more inclined towards sports like Formula One and Tennis.
