Martin Kaymer focused on what could be a huge weekend
This could be a huge weekend for Martin Kaymer, capping off an unforgettable year for the 25-year-old German golfer. If Kaymer were to win the Dubai World Championship, the season-ending
event on the European Tour schedule, he would win a whopping $2.75 million, finish number-one on the money list, and become the new number-one ranked golfer in the world. Kaymer currently sits at seven-under for the event after two rounds, just two shots back
of the leaders.
Graeme McDowell entered the week second on the money list as the only player who can catch Kaymer. But after two disappointing rounds that put him at one-over for the event after 36 holes,
it would now take a strong comeback for McDowell to win the money title and the $1.5 million bonus that comes with it.
"Of course you don't like to see someone playing bad," Kaymer told reporters of McDowell’s disappointing play. "It makes it a little bit easier. If he was leading the tournament there
would be more pressure on me. My priority is to win the golf tournament and if I win here then nobody can catch me (in the money-list). That's my goal."
A victory in Dubai would also net the German $1.25 million in prize money and cap a wonderful year for Kaymer, who won four times this year, including his first major title at the PGA
Championship.
When asked about McDowell’s season, Kaymer said the Northern Irishman should be happy with his year. "He (McDowell) deserves to come second in the Race to Dubai. He won a major this year
(at the U.S. Open), he has had a great season."
In order for Kaymer to overtake Westwood as the number-one player in the world, he needs to win and have Westwood finish worse than second-place or have a second-place finish
with Westwood finishing outside the top-27. Westwood is currently third with scores of 69-67 making him eight under par.
McDowell admitted he was feeling some fatigue this late in the season, adding that he’s not entirely out of it. "It's not over. Going 65-65 at the weekend is not out of the question. I
just have to rest. I have got to somehow go out and relax and have a good time, maybe have a few beers tonight and hang out by the hotel pool."
