Martin Kaymer hopes to build on his good performance in the Portugal Masters
Martin Kaymer hopes to continue his strong track record at the Portugal Masters, when he tees off this week at the Oceânico Victoria Golf Course, on Thursday, October 11, 2012.
In two of the last three starts that he made in the tournament, Kaymer recorded two top-10 finishes, which speak of his strength of playing on the Portuguese soil.
Two weeks ago, the 27-year-old clinched the winning point for the European team in the Ryder Cup at the Medinah Country Club.
Standing on the 18th green in his Sunday’s singles match against Steve Stricker, he needed a six-footer to take his team to another victory in the tournament.
He then kept his nerves under control and rolled in the ball for a par putt and marked the biggest comeback recorded by the European team in the history of the event.
Prior to his heroics in the biennial event, the German had a disappointing run of seven months that saw him struggling to record a single top-10 finish.
However, the 2010 PGA Champion now believes that he is back in form and ready to challenge his rivals on the course on a regular basis.
“I worked a lot on my swing that I didn't have a lot of time to work on my short game, and I think once we can get that going again, I will be able to compete more often and put myself up there,” he said.
Last week, at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, he took the 34th spot on the leaderboard, at the end of the tournament.
Talking to the European Tour’s official website, he stated that he failed to keep the momentum going and made a number of mistakes on the greens last week.
Therefore, he spent ample amount of time on the practice range, working especially on his putting technique.
According to him, his past experience in the tournament will also provide him some advantage over his competitors.
“I played very well here in the past, and at the moment, I feel very happy the way I hit the ball,” said Kaymer.
“Unfortunately last week my putter was very cold. ...That's why I spent a little bit more time on the putting green yesterday and today and hopefully will be ready for a good round tomorrow”.
