Martin Kaymer in contention at the Maybank Malaysian Open – Golf News
Martin Kaymer fired a five-under par 67 in the second round of the Maybank Malaysian Open to remain in contention at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club.
The 27-year-old German carded a total of six birdies against a lone bogey to tie for the sixth place on the leaderboard.
He said that the course is really favouring the players and one can easily manage birdies and eagles as the greens are really amazing and soft.
While playing the par-five third hole, his second shot found the green, giving him a possibility for an eagle. However, he missed the chance and two putted for a birdie.
According to him, he over-read the greens on the course and missed a few chances that would have taken him to the top of the leaderboard.
He looked satisfied with his performance in the tournament so far. He believes that a few more putts in the final two rounds can easily earn him a victory in the event.
“I think you can play very aggressively around here,” the world number seven said. “It is still fairly soft out there and when you have come from Augusta, it feels fairly easy. I hit the ball well today so I can be more aggressive over the weekend”.
“The greens were a little bit better this morning and I just prefer to play in the morning, especially out here in this weather and these conditions,” he added.
“Yesterday when I played in the afternoon, the heat was brutal at times, especially when you are standing on some of the tee boxes and there is not a lot of wind going through”.
Moreover, he was among the players who completed their second round before the game was suspended on Friday evening because of the bad weather conditions. Therefore, the second round was then completed on Saturday, early morning.
South African Louis Oosthuizen carded a four-under par 68 to surge to the top of the leaderboard. He currently has the tournament score of 10-under par.
Stephen Gallacher, Jbe Kruger and Otto Hennie tied for the second spot at nine-under par. Hennie had the best round as he managed to score an eight-under par 64.
