Martin Kaymer lands in Malaysia for his latest bid at Maybank Malaysian Open
World number seven, Martin Kaymer is now heading to Malaysia for his latest venture at the Maybank Malaysian Open and will be wrestling against a stiff contingent of European Tour players at he windy Asian turf.
Kaymer finished off his last bid in the Masters, tied for joint 44th and was able to make the halfway cut for the first time in the event.
He has played for five Masters titles so far in his otherwise stellar career but has not been able to pull in a strong finish in the event, let alone a victory.
Kaymer is known for his penchant at the Asian turf and has won his first World Golf Championship title, the WGC Champions here in Asia.
He said, “The most important thing is that I come to tournaments that I feel like I have a chance to win. I’ve prepared very well in the last few weeks to put myself in a good position on Sunday afternoon”.
Kaymer will be playing alongside Englishman Simon Dyson and Spaniard Alvaro Quiros, both of whom have missed the cut in the Masters last week.
Both these players have also lost their chances of being picked up for the Ryder Cup this year, scheduled at Medinah Country Club.
Kaymer is contemplating a high finish this week amid plethora of rampaging players and considers the course comparatively easier than the notorious Augusta National.
He added, “Obviously coming from the Masters, the golf course looks a bit easier. It will be very difficult to hit the fairways because the drive zones are very small, maybe 10 or 15 yards. It is even tighter than some US Open golf courses that I’ve played
on in the past”.
Kaymer has now fallen to world number seven from his once high of number four last week.
He surged to the top of the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) earlier last year, after pulling in a runner up finish at WGC Accenture Match Play Championship in Tucson, Arizona.
He defeated Bubba Watson in the semi final of the event and was finally taken over by the Match Play expert Luke Donald in the final round.
