Martin Kaymer lifts Nedbank Golf Challenge trophy 2012
Today Martin Kaymer is the man everybody seems to recognize. A spectacular third day lead at Gary Player Country Club translated to a final day victory for the Ryder Cup hero, who could not believe his ‘stroke’ of luck.
''I was telling (my caddie) I need a win. I need a win in 2012,'' he told the reporters.
“I’m just very happy to finally win this year,” Kaymer added. “That was the important thing for me, because I’ve practiced very hard and played very well the last few weeks and months, but it just hasn’t happened for me on the golf course”.
The Garth Mulroy and Nicolas Colsaerts pair opened the final fourth day at Sun City South Africa, but finished the tournament in the bottom three of the final standing.
Colsaerts’ double bogey on the par-4 8th hole was what sealed his fate in the lower half of the closing rankings.
Mulroy’s play was as doleful as ever too, finishing the last round tallying 2-over-par 74 (accumulating a grand total of 9-over-par 288). The avid rugby fan ought to reconsider life as a golfing pro.
Charl Schwartzel came closest to realizing the South African dream of a Nedbank Golf Challenge triumph in about half a decade.
He ended the tournament with a 6-under-par 282, second only to the champion’s 8-under-par overall.
Schwartzel and the Mossel Bay-based Louis Oosthuizen had been the home favourites of the event. Oosthuizen lost the third position to American Bill Haas after a string of bogeys that put a period on his dreams of grandeur.
The last hole of the day saw him flat tire with an inept bogey on the par-4. What a day!
Bill Haas had taken due advantage of the Oosthuizen lapse, securing his place at third, at the final finish of the tournament.
The eagle earlier on had been a huge help in leapfrogging Lee Westwood and ‘King Louie’ from the fourth place to the third. The third-place finish will work well to improve Haas’ chances, as he eyes a possible Masters in the coming season.
Lee Westwood’s dream, of course, came to a crashing end after a misplaced double bogey on the 14th hole that kept his final round score stagnant at 1-over-par 73. He ended the tournament at the fifth position, four short than what he had hoped
for.
