Martin Kaymer makes a comeback with a 67 in the first round of Players Championship
Martin Kaymer finished tied for fifth place in the first round of the $9.5-million Players Championship, which is taking place at the par-72 Tournament Player Club, Sawgrass.
After a gap of twelve weeks, the German made himself visible during Professional Golf Association (PGA) Tour event and managed to entertain the crowd with his driving accuracy.
Kaymer teed-off from the front alongside Tiger Woods and reeled seven birdies against two bogeys. His first accomplishment arrived at the opening hole, when he rolled a 20-feet long birdie putt from the rough on the right side. Without
celebrating the enticed shot, the German walked towards the next hole and hammered a fantastic tee-shot onto the right side of the fairway-few inches away from the water.
Pressurized by the wind blowing from behind him, Kaymer took out a 2-iron from his golf bag and faded a shot onto the green. The camera followed the shot, as it landed and hit the green in regulation.
The sound of claps filled the second green and Kaymer marched towards the next hole to carve a similar shot, but to his despise, the ball could not reach the green and fell in the bunker, which ultimately resulted in a bogey. Kaymer
wiped the blemish with an immediate birdie and left rest of the front nine holes at par. He sealed it with a score of 3-under-par, 33.
On his way to the back, Kaymer netted three birdies against a lone bogey. The 26-year-old hammered the tenth hole with the fifth birdie of the day and roped to the clubhouse after picking two more and compiling a score of 5-under-par,
67.
Kaymer finished tied first in driving accuracy and fourth in putting stats, which proved that the player had been working both, on his short and long game.
When asked to comment on his game, Kaymer said, “I'm still working on it, it was just a little bit easier today because I was working a lot the last two, three days on the range. I was hitting a lot of balls trying to get the swing
going, and as I said, I used the word changes for my swing, but they are more adjustments. It's just something that I wanted to change anyways, and today it worked out fantastic, and I will keep working on it.”
Kaymer would be hoping to back himself on his first round performance and achieve similar results in the following days.
