Martin Kaymer nominated Golfer of the Month award on the European Tour
Martin Kaymer’s stunning victory at the WGC-HSBC Championship, where he overcame a deficit of five shots to clinch his long-awaited victory in Shanghai, has now been conferred with the Race to Dubai European Tour Golfer of the Month Award.
Renowned Golf Correspondent of BBC Radio Five Live, Iain Carter said,
“Although there have been many superb performances over the last six weeks, including Rory McIlroy’s majestic victory in Hong Kong, Alvaro Quiros’ superb triumph in the Dubai World Championship and Luke Donald’s clinching of an historic money list double
by winning The 2011 Race to Dubai, it was Martin Kaymer’s stunning triumph in Shanghai – and the manner in which it was achieved with nine birdies in his last 12 holes – that made it so special.”
Some of the high profile gofers from the European Tour were listed for the accolade including Irishman Rory McIlroy and the Race to Dubai Money Leader Luke Donald, Kaymer was selected for his outstanding final round in Shanghai. Kaymer started off the final
day five shots behind the leader and finished three shots ahead of the field. He pulled in a mammoth nine-under, 63, lowest single round score in any WGC Stroke Play event yet. He carded nine birdies in the 12-hole stretch to consolidate his position and finally
lift the title.
Kaymer had been performing well at the closing of the season and remained in contention on quite a few occasions, never really winning a title. He finished runners up in European Masters, played well at the President’s Cup, and had been in search of his
second victory in the year. He won his first title in January on the European Tour and surged to the top at the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) but was dethroned by current world number three Lee Westwood. Kaymer had dropped to number six later but with
his victory in shanghai, he has again surged to number four on the OWGR.
Other Golfer of the Month awards for the year 2011 were conferred upon Luke Donald (February and May), Paul Lawrie (March), Charl Schwartzel (April), Rory McIlroy (June), Darren Clarke (July), Thomas Björn (August), Michael Hoey (September) and Sergio Garcia
(October). All of these players will now be evaluated for Golfer of the Year award which is likely to go to the rampaging McIlroy or the world number one Donald.
