Martin Kaymer on a roll in Dubai World championship, may become number one
There is a strong chance 2010 will be Martin Kaymer’s year. Kaymer, who is currently leading the Race to Dubai list, got off to a solid start at the Dubai World Championship. The young gun went into his first battle with Graeme McDowell, who is in second
place in the money list.
Both the players scored par on the opening hole but Kaymer set the course on fire as he sank a six-foot birdie putt at the next hole. Martin is £250,000 ahead of McDowell and will not let go of this honour that easily.
Along with being awarded the European Tour number one player award, the winner of the list will win approximately £1.7 million this weekend. This is due to the 776,000 Euros prize money plus the £932,024 bonus the winner gets.
On the third hole, Kaymer posted an eagle and quickly shared the third position on the leader board. Just after three holes, Kaymer was at a decent position in the tournament. On the other hand, the U.S Open Champion had a lucky shot on the second hole.
Since the ball hit Kaymer’s ball, it finished closer to the hole than it would have otherwise.
Even with the advantage, Graeme wasn’t able to score a birdie and achieved a par. At this point, Kaymer is just five behind the current leader of the first round, Noh Seung Yul. After finishing his eight holes, the 19-year-old Korean posted a 6-under par.
Following Seung-Yul is Thongchai Jaidee at 4-under, who is sharing the score with Robert Karlsson.
The former Ryder Cup players, who got off to a great start in the morning, Sergio Garcia and Henrik Stenson both posted 3-under 69. The only good performance given by Stenson was at The Open. Winning the Players Championship last year, he was at fourth place
but dropped down to 49th.
"I won The Players on Bermuda grass, but it's not my favourite surface", said Stenson.
Along with Kaymer and McDowell in close competition to cross the finish line, they shouldn’t forget the defending champion and World number one Lee Westwood. Westwood is at number three on the money list and won on the same course last year
If Kaymer finishes in second place or wins, he will dethrone Westwood as the number one player in the World. Martin Kaymer, who is already on a roll this year, has a lot to win this weekend. Up till now it looks like Kaymer is not very far from achieving
his goals.
