Martin Kaymer ousts Woods to become new world number two
First, he earned a deal with Hugo Boss and now he has replaced Tiger Woods as the new world number two. Life is good for Martin Kaymer.
26-year-old Martin Kaymer has jumped a spot in Official World Golf Rankings, owing to his triumph at Abu Dhabi Golf Club, and has become the second best golfer in the world.
The German wrapped the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship with a score of 24 under par on.
The two-digit number is by far the largest figure attained in the tournament, which ultimately helped Kaymer, earn the second highest spot in golf’s World Rankings.
Initially, the spot was occupied by Tiger Woods for twelve weeks, but a powerful performance pushed Kaymer ahead of Woods.
After this victory, Kaymer is a few points away from the world number one, Lee Westwood. Although, Kaymer is eyeing the crown in the long-run, he still does not regard it as his number one priority.
In an interview held earlier, Kaymer said, “Every tournament I play this year, at least in the beginning, it will be like this. If you finish here or there, you get to No 2 and of course, if you get to No 2 you want to get No 1. But
it is not my main goal this year”.
The player had several opportunities last year to dispose of Westwood, but did not avail them. Initially, he failed to win the PGA Grand Slam, which would have shot him to the top and later he failed to win the Dubai Championship that
carried points.
However, after the big achievement, Kaymer seems happy, but at the same time humble. While speaking to the press after his triumph, Kaymer said, "Hopefully I can stay there for a while. It is definitely nice to take over from the player
who, for me, is the best in the world".
Earning the world number two spot in the start of 2011 has assured his prowess on the game and his successful year ahead. The German is on the steps to match his last years’ saga, in which he started with a triumph in Abu Dhabi and
followed with historic wins at Gleneagles, Netherlands, and Scotland.
In the coming week, Kaymer will head towards Torrey Pines to compete in the Farmer Insurance Open. The same tournament in which, Woods, will take part. Seems another interesting battle is lined up for the new world number two.
