Martin Kaymer practices with Bernhard Langer to tame the vicious Augusta National ahead of the Masters
Despite an overwhelmingly disappointing record at Augusta National, Martin Kaymer is least perturbed about it and vows that he will be a completely different man at the Masters this year.
Former world number one has now slipped to number six on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) and is now hoping to emulate his idol and the golfing giant from Germany, Bernhard Langer.
He said, “I feel a lot better about my game this year than I did last time. I’ve changed a few things in my swing, and they are working well. I’ll go a little bit earlier to Augusta, maybe the weekend before, to try to prepare better”.
This is something Kaymer has said on several occasions before but the record speaks for itself where the lanky German has missed the halfway cut on all four appearances in the event.
Kaymer had a turbulent start this year where he failed to make the cut at the star-studded Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship, an event where he had won three times in last four years.
He recovered later but the start is less impressive as compared to last year where he entered the coveted Masters ranked number one in the world. Things have certainly changed this year.
He added, “These days I can shape the ball much more than I could last year, which is what you need at Augusta, so I’m much more confident than I have been in the past”.
The two-time Masters winner and the only German to bag the accolade, Langer is all out to help Kaymer find his way through the tricky Augusta National.
Kaymer surged to the top of the OWGR in February last year, when he defeated Bubba Watson in the quarter final of the WGC Accenture Match Play Championship and became the only German to rise to the top after Langer.
Kaymer will be playing a few practice rounds alongside Langer before heading into the fifth Masters of his career.
Kaymer further added, “Hopefully playing a practice round with Bernhard will help me”.
Also part of the field are the Rory McIlroy who led the opening three rounds last year and a resurging Tiger Woods who has won the title for four times in his grizzled career.
