Martin Kaymer praises Luke Donald’s exceptional form – Golf news
Martin Kaymer has come close of breaking his winless taboo in the current season on quite some occasions but has not been able to reach the summit so far. His last victory came earlier in January this year and since then, the 26-year-old German has not won
a single event on either side of the Atlantic.
Kaymer finished for a disappointing joint 30th at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland last week, where he was attempting to defend the title he won last year. Kaymer however, lauded World Number One, Luke Donald’s remarkable spree
on the summit of the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR).
Kaymer said, “It is very impressive because it is not easy mentally. He’s older but it’s still difficult at that position to still keep going and to have goals and keep practicing. It feels like every week he plays, he finishes in the top 10.”
Kaymer, who himself has been on the summit of the OWGR, although for a relatively short period of time, knows well enough the difficulties that come alongside the accolade.
Kaymer admittedly added, “[I]t takes some time to get used to that thought, first of all. I think after a while, it is okay, and you can handle it. But the first month or two, it was tough to get used to that thought.”
Donald is not only on top of the FedExCup points table but is also on top of the European Tour Money List. He is hoping to maintain his status quo until the end of the season, marking an unprecedented feat in the history of the sport.
Meanwhile, Kaymer continues battling his form vows that he has been going through for almost a year. He finished as a runner-up at Omega European Masters last month behind winner, Thomas Bjorn, and successfully retained his sixth position on the OWGR. The
sturdy German is well aware that his complacency will not be helping him for a long time.
US Open champion, Rory McIlroy, has now soared to Number Three on the rankings after yet another stellar finish at last week’s Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. He shot an amazing round of 65 on the final day to challenge countryman, Michael Hoey, for the
summit, barley missing it by two shots.
Kaymer became the second German golfer in the sport who reached the summit of the OWGR after Bernhard Langer. He rose to the top after runner-up finish at the WGC Accenture Match Play Championship at Tucson, Arizona, in January. Contrary to the top-ranking
players on the OWGR like Donald, Lee Westwood, Dustin Johnson and Steve Stricker, Kaymer has won a major event in his short career, which is the PGA Championship in 2010. Kaymer and McIlroy are the only players among the top-five who have won a major title.
