Martin Kaymer prepares for the Open Championship final and world number one spot after making the cut
Martin Kaymer made the cut into the third round of the Open Championship, which is under way at the par-70 Royal St George’s Golf Club in Kent, England. The 140th edition of the tournament serves as a chance for the German to reclaim the world
number one spot, with Lee Westwood and Luke Donald out of contention.
The lowest score posted on Friday was 67, by Charl Schwartzel, Tom Lehman and Raphael Jacquelin.
Kaymer teed off from the front and birdied two of the eighteen holes to compile a score of 68. He missed a par-putt at the eighth hole and joined a group of four players at the third spot. The 26-year-old is one stroke behind the two leaders, Darren Clarke
and Lucas Glover.
Pleased at his performance, the German said, “I think the first two rounds were fairly good and I'm happy with that.”
Kaymer had to battle tough weather conditions in the first two rounds and according to the weather forecast, things only look to be getting worse. Wind will accompany a heavy downpour on the weekend, which will make the greens slippery, apart from the the
visual blur that the players would encounter. Despite knowing the threats, the world number three is confident of a good finish in the competition.
“...if the weather comes in, if the rain comes in and the wind, then it's a battle. Then you need to fight, and then it becomes very difficult to keep that position. But I'm ready for it. I had a week off last week, so I'm prepared for some mental strength
out there. I think I should be fine,” Kaymer said while speaking to reporters after the day's play.
If the 26-year-old braves the weather and course conditions in the coming week, he will automatically make his way into the top of the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR). A single major winner, Kaymer is just a few points behind world number one Luke Donald,
and number two Westwood.
