Martin Kaymer returns to action at the KLM Open
After missing each of the tournaments on the European Tour, following his missed cut at the PGA Championship last month, Martin Kaymer returned to action at the KLM Open, on Thursday, September 6, 2012.
The former world number one fired a five-under par 65 and shared the second spot on the leaderboard, two strokes behind the leader, Graeme Storm. In total, Kaymer recorded five birdies and an amazing eagle against a lone bogey.
Fabrizio Zanotti and Raphaël Jacquelin were the other two players who joined him on the leaderboard after posting a 65. Zanotti was the only one among them to post a bogey-free round.
Recently, the 2010 PGA Champion made it to the European Ryder Cup team by taking the last qualifying spot. This week, he proved his worth with a strong start, at the Hilversumsche Golf Club.
“Today was a good day but I don't want to get ahead of myself as we have three days to go here and three weeks until The Ryder Cup,” said Kaymer. “The main goal now is to play as good as possible, to hit balls, to work and then deliver at The Ryder Cup.
“I'm not hitting the ball great yet but I am making good progress and that is important,” he added. “Going into the round I didn't know if it would be a 65 ...because there was not a lot of consistency. But my missed shots today were ok and I also hit a
few nice ones”.
Kaymer was grouped with the European Team Captain José María Olazábal and his team-mate for the biennial event, Nicolas Colsaerts.
That was the major reason why Olazábal seemed really happy at the end of the round, despite posting a one-over par score.
Olazábal wants his players to maintain their form till the end of this month, when the team event will be held at the Medinah Country Club, from September 28 to 30, 2012.
Kaymer also confirmed that he had a small conversation with his captain, at the end of the day.
According to him, Olazábal advised him to play his natural game and keep the momentum flowing, going into the remaining rounds.
