Martin Kaymer shown the door by rampaging Matt Kuchar in WGC Accenture Match Play Championship
German Martin Kaymer has now seemed to slide into a whirlwind of seemingly endless vows and has yet again failed to make it to the Sunday finals at the star-studded WGC Accenture Match Play event.
The lanky German was among some of the surprise performers in last year’s episode of the dreaded knock-out format.
He defeated most of the grizzled players in his group and made it to the semi finals after taking over the long-hitting Bubba Watson in the quarterfinals.
His victory over Watson also helped him soar to the top of the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) for the first time in his career.
Kaymer is only the second German to surge to the top of the OWGR after the legendary Bernhard Langer.
This time around, however, Kaymer is not in his best of forms. American Matt Kuchar, who has done amazingly well so far in the event, took the world number four by surprise and pulled in no fewer than five holes in the 18-hole stretch.
Starting off from front nine, Kaymer made an early move to bag the second hole at par-five, 2nd. For the rest of the front nine, Kuchar gave him little opportunity to make his move.
Kuchar two holes before making the turn to go 1-up. He made the turn to card another three blistering birdies to finally close the round with a convincing 4 & 3.
Kaymer said, “Well, Matt played very consistently. He didn't make any mistake really, but I made a few today unfortunately. I didn't really make birdie on the par 5s, besides the second hole. I actually made bogey on 8. I had a 6- or 7-footer and 3 putted. So I made too many mistakes today”.
Kaymer has a devastating season so far. He failed to make the halfway cut at his favourite hunting ground the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship where he has won three times in the last four years.
He came back with a strong performance in the Qatar Masters in Doha but has now fallen for yet another early exit from the star-studded event.
Kaymer insists that he is making improvements with his putter and hopes to make it big in the coming events on both sides of the Atlantic.
He added, “I have a straighter ball flight now. I have a new 3-wood and a new driver. They work perfect for me. I have a better feel. So I feel like I'm in a different state than last year. But I'm in a long process now. I can see every month it's getting better”.
The top-eight players will now be locked in the quarterfinals on Saturday with four of them proceeding to the semi-finals on Sunday.
The final will be played on the same day in the later session.
