Martin Kaymer starts well at the BMW International Open – Golf News
Martin Kaymer made use of the home soil advantage and carded nine birdies against a lone bogey to share the second spot on day one of the BMW International Open, on Thursday, June 20, 2013.
Kaymer is currently being lauded as one of the hot favourite for a victory this week at the Golfclub München Eichenried, because of his strong track in the event, he secured a victory in the tournament in 2008.
Starting on the 10th hole, he recorded three straight birdies starting from the 11th hole and repeated the same over the last three holes of the back nine.
The front nine of the course witnessed him adding another three shots to his scorecard, while conceding a lone bogey to finish just one stroke behind the pace set by the South African veteran star Ernie Els.
At the end of the day, he found himself sharing the second position with Robert-Jan Derksen or Netherlands, Matthew Baldwin of England and Swede Alex Noren.
Talking to the European Tour’s official website, Kaymer expressed his pleasure in posting a low score after a long time. According to him, the playing conditions were really favourable to him in Munich and he plans to build on
to his strong start to mount a title charge on Sunday.
“In general, the last few months, I haven't had a low round at all, so obviously it's a little bit of a different golf course that we play this week, so there are lots of chances,” said former US PGA Champion Kaymer.
“I just want to put myself in position. It's not so much about really trying to win.  I try to put myself in position on Sunday, and then we will see and I think I will have an advantage with the people here and very good support.
I had fun today and I had a good group, too, to play with,” he added.
Derksen, Baldwin and Noren, in the meantime, remained bogey free throughout the first round and finished one stroke ahead of Alexander Levy, Tom Lewis and Matthew Nixon.
Thongchai Jaidee, who is among the hottest additions to the tournament from Asia, carded eight birdies while conceding two bogeys to finish tied for the ninth spot on the leaderboard.
