Martin Kaymer to be part of the field at star-studded Volvo World Match Play Championship in Spain
German Martin Kaymer may have a lacklustre year so far on the European Tour, the 27-year-old former world number one is still upbeat about his chances of taking down the Volvo World Match Play Championship in May.
The lanky German made the halfway cut at the Masters for the first time in his career and although he may not have won a title as yet, he is confident that he is on the right track to do so in a matter of months.
Kaymer qualified to be part of the 24-man field at the event, scheduled at the scenic Finca Cortesin in Spain from May 17-20.
He said, “I am excited to return to Finca Cortesín. It is an amazing venue and hotel and with it being a limited field match play event, it certainly stands out on my schedule as being a very special week which I look forward to very much”.
Kaymer will be up against a strong line up of players like Darren Clarke the 2011 Open Champion, two-time US Open Champion, Retief Goosen and 1999 Open Champion, Paul Lawrie and many others.
He will also be at loggerheads with the English Match Play experts Ian Poulter and Justin Rose, both searching for their respective breakthroughs in the season.
Kaymer lost to Luke Donald in the semi final last year and is known to have a penchant for the Knock Out format of the sport.
He also performed well in 2011 WGC Accenture Match Play Championship in Tucson, Arizona where he again lost to Luke Donald in the final round.
He added, “I lost in the semi finals last year to Luke Donald so will be looking to go a bit further this year! I think any match play tournament in a Ryder Cup year has extra importance and especially with us playing in Spain where José María will be keeping
an eye on us”.
Currently ranked number six on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR), Kaymer has to the top of the summit once in his career, owed, primarily, to his solid performance in Tucson last year.
The event will feature eight groups of three-player each who will wrestle their up to the next rounds over the weekend.
