Martin Kaymer wins KLM Open
After winning the PGA Championship on 15 August, Martin Kaymer of Germany took three weeks off to celebrate the victory that put him in fifth place in the world rankings. Now the 25-year-old golfer has returned to professional golf with a victory at the KLM Open at the Hilversumsche Gold Club in Holland.
"I was ready to win again," said Kaymer. "I felt very strong and I was very patient."
Kaymer finished 14-under par after four very consistent rounds (67-67-66-66), and looked confident doing it. His confidence comes from winning his first major tournament.
"Well that was obviously one of the biggest tournaments we play all year, and, when you win one of those [Majors], then it gives you the biggest confidence you can get," he said.
Fabrizio Zanotti of Paraguay and Christian Nilsson of Sweden tied for second place at the KLM Open with a score of 10-under par.
The win gave Kaymer a €500,000 lead over Graeme McDowell in the Race To Dubai, formerly the Order of Merit. The name was changed to represent the addition of the new season ending tournament in Dubai, the Dubai World Championship, which will take place in November.
He also won the Race to Dubai Golfer of the Month Award for August, mainly for his PGA Championship win.
“It is always an honour to be named The European Tour Golfer of the Month but to get the award for winning a Major is even better,” said Kaymer. “It’s great news that I have won it and my brother will be pretty pleased because he was saying to me recently that winning the PGA will mean I will win the Golfer of the Month, and he was right.”
Before the season began, Kaymer said that his goal for the season was to earn a spot on Europe’s Ryder Cup team. Now he’ll be expected to contribute a strong game for Europe as one it the team’s best players.
Only one golfer on the European team has a higher ranking than Kaymer, Lee Westwood is ranked third in the world. The other three golfers ahead of Kaymer in the world ranking will all play for the American team: Tiger Woods, the number one ranked golfer in the world and a Captain’s pick for the Ryder Cup team, Phil Mickelson, ranked number two, and Steve Stricker, who is ranked fourth.
The Ryder Cup begins on 1 October in Newport, South Wales.
