Martin Kaymer wins the title, Westy wins the crown
He could not defeat Dustin Johnson in the singles at the Celtic Manor, where the Ryder Cup was taking place but he certainly stole the show at Alfred Dunhill Links Championship; Martin Kaymer conquered the links by carding a 66
in the final round at the Old Course. He was followed by Danny Willett on the second and John Parry on the third.
The Sunday round was a huge surprise for the critics who believed that none of the Ryder Cup squad will be able to reach the top 10 of the leaderboard. Though they were correct to an extent as Kaymer was the only one in the top
10, whereas, the rest of the lot was far behind, except Ross Fisher and Lee Westwood who managed to take the 11th place.
The German was in the lead from the starting of the round, but there came a moment when the 23-year–old, Danny Willett, holed a 50 feet putt for a birdie on the Road Hole and followed it with another birdie on the 18th.
According to experts, the shot on the last hole was the most beautiful shot of the day. The way, Willett calculated the accuracy of the shot and the way the ball rolled through the road across the fairway; it was the most delightful sight in the afternoon.
Even Danny Willett was surprised at his shot but his competitor, Kaymer had different views: "The putt on the 17th was pure luck. If you had given me a par there I would have paid you good money for it. And the birdie on the 18th
– that was more luck than skill.”
A little behind was John Parry, who initially started with scores of 67-65 but his journey towards the end did not seem satisfactory. He made a 71 in the third round, whereas, 72 in the last. The overnight leader three-putted the
11th and 13th hole but drove the ball into a gorge which drafted a double-bogey seven on his scorecard.
The English man was quite depressed with his game and told the press, “I lost all my momentum, it’s not like I bottled it, I just don't think I was playing well enough on the day."
Kaymer seized the opportunity of victory when he saw the threat from Parry’s side getting eliminated. With this tournament Kaymer has recorded a hat-trick in winning all three tournaments in which he made an appearance: first it
was the US PGA Championship in August, then a triumph at Celtic Manor and now the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.
There was yet another winner at the par -72, 7279 yards Old Course; Lee Westwood shared the 11th place in the leaderboard despite of an injury in his right leg. Three months back, the current world number two suffered
from a calf injury and thereby took two months off. However, he was perfectly fit in the Ryder Cup, but in the first round of the tournament, Westy injured himself again to take the back stage for rest of the event. Despite all the hardships, he competed and
finished the 54-hole session with a score of seven under.
This is it for the final round of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship which ended on Sunday, 10th October, 2010 at the triplet course lay out. Martin Kaymer won the championship, while Lee Westwood won the heart and
respect of his friends and fans with utmost dedication and will.
