Martin Kaymer wins while Lee Westwood is still hopeful
The Dunhill Championship 2010 ended on the 11th of October with Martin Kaymer ending the tournament as the winner. The game ended on Sunday with Lee Westwood falling short of Tiger Woods in grabbing the top slot in world rankings.
Lee Westwood was on the verge earning the number one spot in the world had he not achieved a calf injury. According to recent reports, Westwood has been playing continuously for the past two weeks which could be the main reason for his injury. Lee has recently
displayed a tremendous game at the Ryder Cup, following that performance at St. Andrews as well.
The 37-year-old stated that he first experienced the pain at the tee of the 7th hole. Although he faced some aches and pain and was reported to be a bit disturbed, Westwood still stood by his decision of usurping the world number one, Woods. Westwood
however, ended his game at the 11th place of the Dunhill Championship.
In order to attain the respected position, Westwood needed to finish first or second at the Dunhill Championship but the world number two could only card a 73 with 1 up. After the event, Westwood declared that it wasn’t all that bad on one leg.
The best game, on both legs, was displayed by Martin Kaymer who had played a highly challenging game for those bidding to overtake him. The 25-year-old finished his game with a 271 in total and a 66 in his last round.
The last two holes were excellent for the German. Westwood was being chased by Danny Willet at the start of play. The 17th hole which is also known as the infamous Road Hole by many critics observed Kaymer playing a 50 feet birdie. The 18th
hole was also the victim of Kaymer’s birdie when he played his approach shot in a pro-like fashion. Martin Kaymer carried out his approach shot to land 6 feet short of the hole after sending his ball in the air across the fairway.
Kaymer’s response to the 17th and 18th birdies had been rather modest. According to the German, his skill could only earn him a par at the 17th hole. He said that the birdies he played were only due to his luck and nothing
else.
However, his recent statistics favour his skill more than Kaymer’s good luck. He won his last three tournaments with the US PGA Championship in August the beginning followed by the Ryder Cup and then the Dunhill event. He attained a 17 under par in total
and held a three shot lead over the 23-year-old Willet.
His game ended with a 4 shot front over John Parry as well. Parry was leading the Dunhill leader board for two rounds but the 11th and 13th hole changed the match. The Englishmen faltered on the 11th and 13th after
playing a 3 putt. The game then changed pace when he sent his ball in the gorse bush. The previous play gifted Parry a double bogey to break his momentum.
Kaymer stands at fourth place in world rankings and has played with Westwood on two occasions in Wales playing the role of a nervy junior partner. His total contribution to the European Team had been 2 ½ points at the Ryder Cup but the 25-year-old still
considers Westwood’s game much more solid and holds himself in awe of Westwood’s chipping approach.
Westwood has been dreaming about being one of the best golfers and thus the number one in world rankings. Recent reports confirm that Westwood would be resting his injured calf for a while which may give him a final push at his journey to the top. October
31st will mark the end of the American’s 278 week run.
