Martin Kaymer wishes to be a 'lefty' like Phil Mickelson - Golf news
Martin Kaymer, the current World Number One in World Golf Rankings, wishes he was a left-handed player like Phil Mickelson, citing the enormous benefits a golfer has being a left-handed player. "My normal shape is left-to-right,"
commented Kaymer."If I could play the other way around I can fade it all day. Mickelson can and that helps - obviously the draw is more difficult than the fade."
Mickelson will be the defending champion in this week’s Masters at the Augusta National, and has won the tournament three times, while Kaymer, in his three appearances in majors, has missed the halfway cut. Mickelson, better known
as 'lefty' in the golfing circles is shinning with his regained form as he has just come out triumphant in the Houston Open with a stunning 18 birdies.
When Mickelson was asked about Kaymer’s wish of being a left-handed player like him, he replied with a big smile, “I would love Martin to play this tournament left-handed."
Kaymer, who moved to the top slot after defeating Bubba Watson in the semis, lost the WGC Accenture Match Play Championship to Englishman, Luke Donald and holds him in high regards for his straight shots. The 26-year-old German has
worked hard in a short span of time to lift his rankings from number 34 in 2008, after his maiden win in the European tour and the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship the same year.
He is also of the view that Donald holds a high probability of clinching the title given his ability to shoot straight. "His short game is unbelievable” said Kaymer, "Obviously he's not the longest, but he's very straight, so I think
he has the best chances. I asked him how he became so good in short game, but he didn't answer. He said 'I don't know'."
Kaymer is also said to be working over his sport and is reportedly bringing some changes to his playing style, although former champions like Ernie Els have criticised his decision to incorporate any change in his style. Lee Westwood,
the World Number Two, missed a chance to overtake Kaymer’s top slot last week, giving the lanky German a chance to land in Augusta as World Number One, a dream cherished by golfers around the world.
