Martin Keown praises Edin Dzeko
Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown has praised Edin Dzeko’s technical ability; however, he warned that Manchester City will have to switch up their tactics if they want to gain the most from the striker.
The Bosnian became the target of many of the biggest clubs in Europe for his performances for Wolfsburg over the past few seasons. Roberto Mancini beat out all other competitors to bring the prolific striker to Eastlands in the first week of January 2011.
However, Dzeko’s services did not come cheap. Manchester City reportedly paid Wolfsburg a Bundesliga record transfer fee of 27 million pounds for the striker.
Keown believes that Edin Dzeko is worth every penny of that fee, rating him as one of the best strikers in the Europe today. The former Arsenal defender wrote in his column for the Daily Mail, “A lot of the goals I have seen him score came after getting
on the end of crosses. In fact, 30 of his 32 league goals for Wolfsburg came from inside the penalty area. He finishes well with both feet, is very strong and brings people into the game well. Like all the best strikers, he has a knack of being in the right
position when the ball comes into the box.”
Martin Keown went on to add that while Dzeko is a total striker, Manchester City will have to change things up to get the best from him. The former Arsenal defender warned City manager Roberto Mancini that he will have to rethink his tactics to suit the
Bosnian’s style of play.
Keown added, “City set up quite defensively but they have one of the best strikers in Europe now and he (http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Adam-Johnson-c3537
and the full backs to get the service right. At City, the manager plays wingers on the opposite side to their stronger foot, which means they are often cutting inside rather than putting balls in the box. That might not play to Dzeko's strengths.”
We will see whether Edin Dzeko can live up to the hype when he makes his debut against Wolverhampton http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Wolves-c40952 on 15 January, 2011.
