Martin Klizan bows out to Attila Balazs in the qualifiers – BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy 2012
A stunning result was witnessed in the second round qualifier of the BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy, as the top seed Slovakian, Martin Klizan, crashed out of tournament at the hands of the unseeded Hungarian opponent, Attila Balazs,
on Sunday. The exciting contest lasted for one hour and 22 minutes, with the 23-year-old Hungarian coming out as the surprise winner in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.
Being a part of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 swing, the competition was played on the outdoor clay courts of Bucharest, Romania. The Hungarian contender registered a perfect 6-0, 6-0, victory against
the local wildcard entrant, Sebastian Kraila, in the opening round and then continued his belligerent run of form against the top seeded qualifier on Sunday.
The 23-year-old got off to a steady start in the match and built up pace gradually to cruise past Klizan later. He delivered 64 per cent of his first serve on target and bagged 22 out of 36 points on it to get the better of the
top seed opponent. Balazs nailed five out of nine break points in the match, whilst Klizan struggled to convert his opportunities, registering only two out of four serve breaks to finish on the losing side in the end.
Balazs will face off against the fifth seed Canadian opponent, Erik Chvojka, in the qualifying competition on Monday and the winner of the match will get a spot in the main draw of the BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy.
The fifth seed Chvojka had no difficulties at all in winning his second round clash against the unseeded local competitor, Andrei Savulescu, on Sunday. He took merely 57 minutes to wrap up the proceedings in straight sets, 6-1,
6-2, to reach the final round qualifier. He broke the Romanian serve five out of six times and bagged 22 out of 29 first serve points en route to a comprehensive victory.
Chvojka suffered a serve break early in the opener but then went on to strike three break points on the trot to own the set with a breadstick. He then cruised through the second set with two break points to book a date with Balazs
in the qualifying competition.
