Martin Klizan crushes Alejandro Falla to reach round two – US Open 2012
Slovakian contender, Martin Klizan, got the better of Colombia’s Alejandro Falla with a breadstick at the US Open 2012 on Monday. He penned down a 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 victory against the world number 51 to cruise into the second round at the USTA Billie Jean King
National Tennis Center held in Queens, New York City.
The Slovak unveiled his true colours at this last of the four Grand Slam events held in Corona Park and ultimately crushed Falla in straight sets. After pulling out the victory in one hour and 16 minutes, Klizan comfortably secured a place in the round of
64 at Flushing Meadows.
Klizan stepped into the Court number 12 of this major hard court event in high spirits. He got the coveted break in the seventh game and jumped to a 5-3 lead. Apart from losing his edge in the ninth game, the Slovak broke his rival’s serve once again and
clinched the opener with a 6-4 score line.
Ranked 52nd in the South African Airways ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour Rankings, Klizan went out of control in the following set. He cruised to a 4-0 before the Colombian could come on the score sheet. The Slovak pocketed
the last two games and subsequently pulled out the set with a breadstick.
The Slovakian veteran carried his winning ways in the final set and reeled off the opening four games. Apart from losing his serve in the fifth game, Klizan capitalized on another break chance and consequently bagged the set by winning six games to two.
On the whole, Klizan smashed nine aces and produced a slightly higher first serve share of 61 per cent as opposed to his rival’s 60 per cent. He amazingly availed 36 out of 48 points on it and ended the match with 96 points.
Up next for Klizan is the winner of the match between fifth seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and the Slovakian qualifier, Karol Beck.
The local star, Mardy Fish, will accompany the high flying Slovak in the second round. He trounced the Japanese star, Go Soeda, in straight sets to earn the limelight.
