Martin Laird, Paul Lawrie confirm appearance in Scottish Open – Golf news
Winner of Arnold Palmer Invitational Martin Laird and conqueror of Andalucia Open Paul Lawrie have confirmed their presence in the Barclays Scottish Open which will take place at the Castle Stuart Golf Links in Inverness, Scotland.
Lawrie, who managed a victory after a gap of nine years addressed the press and said that he felt proud at representing his country in the big event.
He said, “It will be good to play Castle Stuart for the first time when I head up there next month after hearing so many good reports about it.”
Later he welcomed his compatriot Laird in the upcoming tournament and added, “It will be great to see Martin at Castle Stuart. I remember meeting him while my coach, Adam Hunter, was in charge of the Scottish amateur squad. He was a nice lad and a good player.
I was impressed with him then and I was impressed with what he did on Sunday.”
Lawrie earned an invitation into the Scottish Open due to his superb performance in Spain. This was his sixth victory on the European Tour, with his last triumph coming in the 1999 Open Championship.
Meanwhile, Laird lifted his second Professional Golfers Association trophy in Florida and managed to enter the event which will serve as a practice match before the Open Championship.
Laird was equally happy for playing a tournament on his home soil. The Scot said that he was looking forward to flying back home to relish the love of his fans, friends and family. The 28-year-old shares strong chemistry with the event. He secured the 10th
place finish in 2009 event and 26th in 2010.
Earlier, he had no plans of competing in the tournament, but shaking the hands of Arnold Palmer at Bay Hills and becoming the first European to conquer the venue gave him enough motivation to test his luck in the Scottish Open.
Laird, who has now surged in top 20 players of the world, will compete three-time major champion Padraig Harrington, Masters Winner Phil Mickelson, the 2010 US Open champion Graeme McDowell and defending champion Edoardo Molinari for the title.
