Martin Laird to make his debut at BMW PGA Championship and hopes to qualify for the upcoming Ryder Cup
Scotsman Martin Laird has now stepped back on his home turf, the European Tour after a trailblazing opening bid on the PGA Tour this season, and will be playing on the European Tour Flagship event, the BMW PGA Championship.
Laird, however, remains adamant that his primary reason to be back on the European Tour is to qualify for the Ryder Cup this year but he cites certain other reasons of his return.
He said, "It's one of the main reasons I'm back (in Europe), but it's not the only reason. I'm coming back in the summer, playing the French Open the week before the Scottish Open. I'm going to ask him if there's anything else I can do to improve my chances”.
Laird pulled in a majestic performance at TPC Sawgrass earlier in the season and finished for a strong runner up position, two strokes behind winner Matt Kuchar.
He also had a runner up finish in the season opener, the Hyundai Tournament of Champions and is currently poised at number 31 on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR).
Winner of the Arnold Palmer Invitational last year, Laird has come out to be a formidable force on both sides of the Atlantic and is now contemplating a berth in the 12-member Ryder Cup team in October this year.
Laird also revealed that he had a discussion with the European Captain Jose Maria Olazabal regarding the upcoming event.
He added, “I wanted to talk to him to let him know that making the team is something I want to do. Hopefully I play well enough to make that Ryder Cup team and then at the end of the year I'll evaluate and see what I want to do next year".
Laird normally plays on the PGA Tour after turning professional in the year 2004 and has rejoined the European Tour this year primarily to qualify for the Ryder Cup scheduled in October in Medinah Country Club, Chicago.
This is also the first time Laird will be making his debut at Wentworth for the star-studded BMW PGA Championship and is brimming with confidence to land the title.
