Martin Laird will play in all four majors in 2011
The year 2010 is almost over and it is ending on a happy note for the Glaswegian golfer, Martin Laird. Martin has had an amazing year so far and hence has been able to secure his spot in the top 50 of the world rankings. By rule,
the top 50 players in the rankings get to play in all the majors. Therefore, with 2011 just a week away, Laird is happy to know that his place is confirmed in all four majors.
The Scottish player was actually hoping to play in the Augusta Masters and eager to participate in the Open and the U.S Open. However, Lucky Laird got more than he had wished for. Due to his performance in this season, he will
also get to play the season’s final major, the USPGA. The USPGA is a crucial tournament in the golfing world and it will take place at Atlanta Athletic Club in Georgia.
Martin is the first golfer from Scotland since Colin Montgomerie in 2007 to be in the top 50. Laird made his breakthrough when he won the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas in 2009. This win was
Laird’s first US PGA title. Following the footsteps of good old’ Monty, who knows, Martin may be the European Ryder Cup team captain one day.
The former Scottish youth champion graduated from Colorado State University in 2004. He currently resides in Arizona and plays more on the USPGA Tour. This year, Laird achieved six top 10 finishes, which include two play-off defeats.
Entering in a playoff is a pretty big deal, and even though he did not win, Martin’s efforts are still applauded.
Martin will now parallel with former U.S Masters winner Sandy Lyle as the only Scots to play in the first major of the season. This tournament will take place at Augusta and will start on April 7th.
Next year will truly be a battle between the continents seeing how the Europeans are dominating golf at the moment.  Three out of the four majors were won by European players this year. Lee Westwood displaced the American Tiger
Woods as golf’s number one player.  Also, Martin Kaymer, who is a German golfer, won the Race to Dubai this year.
Boosting with confidence, Laird is happy with his 2011 schedule and is hoping to achieve a lot more in the year to come.
