Martin Laird wins Arnold Palmer Invitational to clinch his second PGA Tour trophy – Golf news
Martin Laird smashed a score of 8-under par in the four-day session of the Professional Golfers Associations’ Arnold Palmer Invitational, which wrapped up on Sunday at the Bay Hill Club and Lodge in Florida.
Laird bagged $1,080,000 worth of prize money and 500 FedEx points.
The 28-year-old Scot opened the final round with the back nine and after carding one double-bogey in the start, rebounded at the immediate hole. He then dropped one more shot. The resident of Glasgow hit yet another terrible shot at the 15th tee,
which eventually compelled him to hit an 8-iron from the left rough. He then attacked the pin and managed to card a birdie on his scorecard. He hammered one more birdie on the back and capped it with a par score.
Laird marched to the front with the fear of a Steve Marino superb-game-knife hanging over his head. Being unable to cope with the fear, the player lost his cool and carded three more bogeys to compile an aggregate of 3-over par 75.
According to the record, Lairds’ 75 was the highest score a winner had ever recorded in the last round on the PGA Tour. To his luck, his performance in the past three rounds saved him at crucial moments and helped him secure his second PGA Tour victory.
Laird turned professional in 2004 and failed to lift a trophy until 2009 in Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospital for Children Open. He came close to victories twice in 2010, but lost the opportunities after losing the playoff matches. However, despite a poor
play in the final round, Laird finally managed to break the drought.
He said, “I never thought about not winning. That has not to say I knew I was going to win, but that was the focus. I was not out here looking at leaderboard thinking, now I am a shot ahead of whatever. In a way, when I saw I was three-down, I did not have
a choice. I had to start playing some golf.”
