I think your premise is wrong - both are members of Sinn Feinn (McGuinness a self-confessed member of the Provisional IRA). They worked together in negotiations with UK government (they are both MP's but can't take their seats) mainly with John Major and Tony Blair. I think if you asked "Rev Ian Paisley and Gerry Adams?"  then you might be on to something.

Where did you get the idea they were ever enemies? Both are members of  Sinn Féin and former members of the IRA high command.
