There has been pressure on the former Aston Villa manager to add to his squad at the stadium of light but Martin O’Neill has made it clear that Sunderland will not sign players just for the sake of adding to their squad in
the English Premier League...
Sunderland’s manager Martin O’Neill has admitted that he will not dip into the transfer market just to please the fans or to match the on-going trend of buying players just for the sake of buying them in the summer transfer window.
There have been calls for the former Aston Villa manager to add to his squad from fans and critics alike but O’Neill has practiced patience so far in his approach to the transfer market whilst at Sunderland.
O’Neill was brought in to replace Steve Bruce at Sunderland last season and did well to maintain a steady mid-table position with the club. The Black Cats were slipping down into the relegation zone under Steve Bruce but under
Martin O’Neill the club has rediscovered its identity.
However now the tough part begins as O’Neill is expected to improve on last season’s mid-table form and perhaps aim for a higher finish coupled with a cup run. During his time at Aston Villa, O’Neill was quite busy in the transfer
market as he signed player such as Downing but now things have changed for the former Villa man.
O’Neill said, "When we come back from South Korea, I would expect the situation to change. We are obviously in the market to try to strengthen our team, of course. I think that's pretty obvious - all football clubs will be trying
to do that.”
He added, "But for us, it would be nice to add a couple of fresh faces - not just for the sake of it, but to improve the quality of the squad, which is what we are trying to do."
