Sunderland manager Martin O’Neill has urged his young players to use Manchester United’s http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Paul-Scholes-c29394 as a role model as they attempt to make their mark on the game.
The 37-year-old midfielder was once again in the heart of action as Manchester United took on Sunderland in their last game of the season. While they managed to secure a win, it was not enough to win them the Premier League title since Manchester City also won their last game.
Scholes made a comeback for Manchester United in January, returning from retirement to help the Red Devils make a case for the title. His contribution helped Manchester United in almost making the perfect comeback, which was stopped short by Manchester City’s heroics.
O’Neill said in an interview:
“There's Paul Scholes, who has been one of the great players in the last 25 years in this game, and he has come out of retirement and looks as if he's never been away.
He looks as if he is 26 years of age rather than anything else. It's a lot for our younger midfield players to be having a look at and see what you can do.”
While he admitted Scholes was one of a kind and that every other player could not do what he had done, he advised the youngsters to use the midfielder as a benchmark. He believed if they made Scholes their idol, they would work be working towards improvement and success.
For a side battling relegation under former manager Steve Bruce, Sunderland did well to recover under Martin O’Neill. They finished the season with 45 points at 13th position on the English Premier League table and the Irish manager revealed he was pleased with his side’s performance, especially considering the fact they had overcome problems and difficulties.
He revealed:
“We have given everything during the course of it - we fall short, obviously, because we are lacking a number of things, but overall, the effort of the team has been fantastic and the response from the supporters has been great.
I really can't ask for much more from that stand-point.”
