Martin O’Neill, the Sunderland manager, has revealed he intends to handle midfielder http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/David-c10409 Meyler’s situation in the upcoming summer transfer window.
So far the 22-year-old has gone on to make just one start for the Black Cats, along with eight substitute appearances. The reason for his failure to be a more regular part of the season is the fact that he has recently returned from injury after a serious
knee injury.
The former Aston Villa manager was sympathetic towards the Irishman, claiming it had been really difficult for him to return to first team action after the terrible injury. O’Neill admitted that while Meyler had been involved with the team, he had not been
fully fit to make starts.
O’Neill said in an interview:
“It's been really tough for him. He's been involved in the squad but he hasn't started and of course it's frustrating.
It's something we would look at in the summertime. He's a genuinely good lad. He hasn't moaned about it to me, but he did say he would like to play.
His first choice would be playing for Sunderland, but at some stage or another he has to play."
Despite not being in the starting XI, Meyler has not expressed a desire to leave the Stadium of Light. Martin O’Neill felt the player should be rewarded for his loyalty to the club, which is why he intends to tackle the issue over the summer.
Currently O’Neill has many options in midfield, with http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Craig-Gardner-c9475 all competing for a place in the squad. However, there is expected to be more involvement by Meyler next
season.
The player was hopeful of his chances, starting from the next fixture against Manchester United at the Stadium of Light, which will be the final game of the season.
Meyler said:
“I will do some work over the summer and aim to come back for pre-season fitter than ever. I'm just looking forward to a full pre-season, because it is very hard to catch up if you miss out on that."
