Martin Whitmarsh: McLaren going to be much stronger at the Monaco Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh has said that he is confident about his team’s chances for the Monaco Grand Prix as the Monte Carlo circuit is going to suit MP4-26 much better.
Whitmarsh also hoped that the upcoming race is going to be competitive.
“McLaren has an enviable record around the streets of the principality - we've won the race on 15 occasions which is more than any other team - and we go into next weekend aiming to make it 16,” he said.
Monte Carlo is one of the most technical and tight circuits of the Formula 1 calendar as the street circuit requires less downforce in order to achieve faster lap times.
Martin believes that since the MP4-26 has proved that it is quicker on tight sections of the circuit and the upcoming weekend is going to be interesting for the top running teams of the sport.
“Our Barcelona race pace, in particular our sector three times, looked very respectable indeed last weekend - and hopefully that will give us a good idea of what to expect at Monaco, because it's a slow, stop-start section of the track,” said Whitmarsh.
McLaren have a better Kinetic Energy Recovery System than its rivals Red Bull Racing Team. It is believed that most of the teams might not use the KERS for the Monaco Grand Prix since the circuit has just a few long straights. McLaren’s Jenson Button believes
that this change would prove to be advantageous for them and they will be hoping to score the best possible results at the upcoming grand prix.
McLaren are currently 47 points adrift of championship leaders Red Bull Racing in the constructors’ standings while Lewis Hamilton is 41 points short of the drivers’ standings leader and reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel.
The team is hoping to score some good results in the future and hopefully recover from this deficit, as there are still at least 14 races to go in the 2011 Formula 1 season.
