Martin Whitmarsh: McLaren hoping to pull out a second from its car after upgrades – Formula 1 news
McLaren’s team boss Martin Whitmarsh has recently stated that he is hoping that his team’s new car ‘MP4-26’ is going to pull out a second after the team applies its new upgrades at the season opening grand prix that is expected to commence from March 25,
2011.
This means that Martin is expecting that McLaren’s new car might score times a second faster than it is right now which means only one thing that McLaren are going to apply a major upgrade to their new car in Australia.
“I personally wasn't satisfied with the performance of our car at the tests. I want us to be significantly quicker and I believe that we've implemented some changes which are aimed at making the car over a second quicker than it was during the tests,” Whitmarsh
said.
He further stated that the team’s aim is to add at least more than a second of performance to the MP4-26 in order to have a very competitive car before the season opening race in Australia that will take place on March 27, 2011.
McLaren were going through some major reliability issues throughout the pre-season test session period mainly due to some problems caused by the new car’s exhaust system.
“We have a completely new floor and a new exhaust system. There are a lot of other bits and pieces, but they're the clear and obvious ones that people will see in Australia,” he said.
He added that he would like a more simple design this time in order to get rid of the problems their new car is facing right now as a result of which, the team is hoping to perform at its best at the season opener in Australia.
“I believe that the car isn't fundamentally a bad car. I believe that we need to unlock the exhaust-blowing potential. We had some very creative ideas, some of which could have worked spectacularly well,” said Martin.
Nevertheless, Martin admitted that it is going to be a gamble for the team as they plan to make some ‘dramatic changes’ before the race but he believes that they will be worth it for the team.
Other than Whitmarsh, Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton stated that the car has pace but it lacks reliability. However, the team hopes to overcome these problems and it would be a challenge for McLaren to perform up to the mark as compared to their two main
rivals Ferrari and Red Bull Racing at the season opening race.
