Martin Whitmarsh: We were not quite quick enough – Formula 1 news
McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh has said that they could not perform well in 2012 Monaco Grand Prix while he said that Lewis Hamilton’s fifth place finish was the best result which they have been able to achieve.
“We weren't quite quick enough and it didn't quite go our way in the race,” he said. “With one lap to go we were within three seconds off the race leader but on this track if you've got a load of cars between you and the race leader it's very difficult to
do anything about it.”
The 2008 world champion started the race from 3rd grid position but he could only secure fifth position in the race as he lost some crucial time due to poor pit stop strategy.
Even though, he has not been able to claim any victory in the season so far. Nonetheless, he has emerged as one of the most consistent drivers with his third podium finish in the first three races.
He is presently at fourth position in the drivers’ championship with 63 points. Moreover, he is 10 points behind Mark Webber of Red Bull Racing and 4 points ahead of Nico Rosberg of Mercedes.
On the other hand, his teammate, Jenson Button is standing between the Lotus pair of drivers at 7th place in the drivers’ rankings with 45 points. Furthermore, he is 6 points behind Kimi Raikkonen and 10 points ahead of Romain Grosjean.
Although he claimed an impressive victory in the first race held at Albert Park in Melbourne, Australia. However, he has not been able to score even a single point in the next five races.
In addition, Whitmarsh while explaining the reason of Button’s lack of pace in the last race said that he is facing issues with the tyre management.
“I think he's struggling a little bit with tyre energy, but in this race then he spent time behind someone all the way through. We had him on the prime tyre, he was looking after his tyres and he ran it long,” he said.
Nevertheless, he said that he has a firm confidence in his talented drivers and they are looking forward to improve their pace in the forthcoming season.
