Martin Whitmarsh announces full support for Jenson Button
Dismissing all the rumours and speculations, the McLaren team Principal Martin Whitmarsh has confirmed that Jenson Button would not give up his title fight. He very firmly added that the team has extended all their support and assistance for the driver all
through the season and they would continue doing that in the last two races as well.
As the Formula One caravan now plans to move towards the next weekend's Brazilian GP, the team principal states that they would help Button getting as many points as he can.
After the disappointing finish in Japan last weekend, though his victory would be nothing less than a miracle, yet the team is waiting for one. The last weekend saw the British driver finish his race at 12th place due to which he still stands
at fifth place in the Drivers’ Championship.
Currently, he is 42 points adrift the Championship leader, Fernando Alonso, who has a total of 231 points. With only two more races to go the driver is only left with 50 points to play for. Even if he is able to win both the races, though the chances are
very rare, still he would have to pray to see the other four contenders meeting ill-fate to grant him victory.
With the current situation, many of the analysts believe that it would have been more sensible for McLaren to put all their focus on their other team driver, Lewis Hamilton. The 2008 world Champion currently stands at 3rd place in the Championship
and has far better chances of bagging the 2nd title in just fourth year of his career with the series. He is currently only 21 points off Alonso and has demonstrated a far better pace and form in the last race than his teammate.
However, Whitmarsh defended the team’s decision saying, "While Jenson lies 42 points adrift, he has vowed to fight on. As the reigning World Champion, and a great driver, he knows better than most that you can't lift the title without being a resolute fighter.
That's exactly why we hired him, and we'll be supporting him fully next weekend."
Having full confidence on his driver, the principal further said, "If Formula One has taught us one thing over the past couple of years, it's to never give up hope until the odds are no longer possible, that the most unexpected outcome can become a very
real and viable possibility sooner than you can readily imagine. With that in mind we go to Brazil, and then on to Abu Dhabi, still determined to wrest both World Championships.”
