Martin Whitmarsh appreciates Jenson Button wanting to close out career at McLaren – Formula 1
British driver, Jenson Button, wants to end his Formula 1 career with the McLaren team. Although he has not given an exact date for his retirement, he said that he has three to five years left in him and he wants to be with the McLaren team. Martin Whitmarsh
also appreciates the decision and commented that a quick agreement would be settled.
2009 world F1 champion, Button, is now in his second year with the McLaren team and despite giving some mediocre performances, he is still an asset to the McLaren team according to Whitmarsh.
“If Jenson says he is totally committed and wants to do x more years, then I suspect that we could quickly come to an agreement. He's a tremendous asset to the team and when we get around to that, I hope that it will be a quick and easy conversation,” said
Whitmarsh. He has also stated that Lewis Hamilton’s contract with the team should also be extended.
Button commented, “When I finish racing here [McLaren], I won't be racing in Formula 1 anymore. I'm very happy here. I want to enjoy my racing and I'm really enjoying my time here. I might be around for three years, five years...I don't know,” commented
Button. The Brit added that every driver dreams of McLaren and he has no reason to leave the team.
Button had a good start to the 2010 season but was out performed by his team-mate, Lewis Hamilton. In the 2011 season, Button is still behind Hamilton but this time, both are toe to toe in the first three races of the season.
Button is currently third on the points table with 38 points and one podium finish under his belt. Button has struggled a lot in the lower ranked team at the start of his career before making his way into the Brawn GP team to show his true face. Now Button
cannot afford to leave the McLaren team to once again be forgotten in the lower ranks for the rest of his career.
