Martin Whitmarsh appreciates Norbert Haug as he exits from Mercedes – Formula 1 news
McLaren team principal, Martin Whitmarsh, has expressed his appreciation for Norbert Haug who has decided to leave Mercedes at the end of this year after 22 years.
“I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Norbert for all the help and support he's offered McLaren over many years,” Whitmarsh told AUTOSPORT. “The period since McLaren and Mercedes-Benz first teamed up in Formula 1 in the mid-90s has been a successful
and enjoyable one, and Norbert's influence and guidance have been crucial contributors to that enjoyment and success. His love of motorsport is genuine and profound, as is his natural racer's competitiveness. On behalf of everyone at Vodafone McLaren Mercedes,
I wish him well for the future.”
Mercedes has been providing the British team with engines since 1995. It remained a partner of McLaren until they formed their own F1 team in 2010.
Other than Whitmarsh, retired German driver, Michael Schumacher, and head of the Mercedes-Benz cars, Dr. Dieter Zetsche, have also given their praise for Haug.
Schumacher, who announced his second retirement after three years with Mercedes, told that Haug has been a part of Mercedes since he first stepped into F1. The German added that whether Haug and he had been competitors or allies, he was always focused on
his work passionately. He said that Haug was living motorsports and that his exit will leave a huge hole in the world of motorsports.
On the other hand, Zetsche said that he was extremely thankful for Haug’s extraordinary commitment to their company and remaining the face of it for more than twenty years.
Haug, who has admitted that he reached this decision mutually with the board and that the new non-executive chairman of Mercedes, Niki Lauda, had no hand in it, said that he has had no moment without being passionate in his years with Mercedes. He has thanked
his colleagues for their support to achieve the goals they had set. Haug said that it is disappointing they could not succeed much with Mercedes AMG but believes that they will in the future.
Haug is a German journalist and was the president in charge of all the Mercedes-Benz activity.
