Martin Whitmarsh assures equal treatment for Sergio Perez and Jenson Button in 2013 – Formula 1 news
McLaren team principal, Martin Whitmarsh has said that they are going to treat Sergio Perez and Jenson Button equally in the 2013 Formula 1 season.
Lewis Hamilton has moved to Mercedes as Michael Schumacher’s replacement in this year after his long term with the Woking based squad.
In contrast, the British team has signed a multi-year deal with Perez who is going to drive alongside Button in this season.
Although, Whitmarsh said that Button has got more experience as a driver than the 22-year-old. However, he insisted that they will treat both their drivers equally in this season. Furthermore, he said that they expect positive competition between their drivers
which will be good for their team.
“People like to have that debate,” Whitmarsh told Sky Sports News. “The fact is Jenson has got the advantage in terms of knowing the team, he has the experience and he is a World Champion.”
“Jenson will be very generous with his time and his share his opinions, but when he pulls out of the garage, Jenson will want to beat Sergio and Sergio will want to beat Jenson,” he said. “That is the mentality in our team. They will have equal treatment.
I think that competition in the team is good.”
There have been a lot of speculations that McLaren may struggle after the departure of Hamilton in this season. Nonetheless, Whitmarsh has asserted that they have full confidence on their driver line-up. In addition, he said that they are positively looking
forward to perform well in this season.
Besides, he admired the talent and driving skills of Perez. He also said that they will train their new driver so that he may be able to attain competitive results in this season.
“He is very young, very talented and that is exciting,” he added.
It will be important to mention that McLaren struggled a lot with some technical issues in 2012 due to which they lost some crucial points in the championship. Let’s see whether they will be able to resolve their problems during the winter testing or not
and how they compete with their changed driver line-up in this season.
