Martin Whitmarsh believes Lewis Hamilton made a mistake to leave McLaren – Formula 1 news
McLaren team principal, Martin Whitmarsh has said that Lewis Hamilton may regret his decision about leaving his current team in the future.
Hamilton has recently made the announcement that he is going to leave the Woking based team after this season and will join Mercedes in the next year as Nico Rosberg’s teammate while the record championship holder, Michael Schumacher’s future in F1 is still
uncertain.
Moreover, the British driver has asserted that he is feeling very excited about the new challenge and is positively looking forward to win championship titles with Brackley based team in the coming years.
Meanwhile, Whitmarsh has said that if anyone leaves their team because he is aiming to win races, he will probably be making a mistake.
“Mercedes is a great partner of ours and they are a great team,” Whitmarsh told the Guardian. “But for anyone leaving McLaren, and he wants to win, I think that's a mistake because I have faith and belief in this team.”
In addition, he said that they have a history of 40 years in the world of F1 and he asserted that if any driver wants to claim victories, he should join McLaren. Nonetheless, he said that he respects the decision of the 27-year-old and wished him all the
luck in his career ahead.
“Whether you measure it over the last four races, four years or 40 years, we're a fantastic team. So I would say to any driver who wanted to win in this sport: ‘Come and join McLaren’. I wouldn't advise anyone to leave McLaren if they want to win, but I've
got to respect Lewis's decision and really wish him well,” he added.
Besides, he said that they had tried everything to keep Hamilton in their team but it couldn’t prove out to be successful. Nonetheless, he is not feeling upset and has signed a new contract with Sergio Perez of Sauber who will drive as Jenson Button’s teammate
in the coming year.
Additionally, he said that they have full faith in their next year’s driver line-up which is capable enough of winning the championship titles.
