Martin Whitmarsh believes Lewis Hamilton may regret his move to Mercedes – Formula 1 news
McLaren team principal, Martin Whitmarsh believes that their driver, Lewis Hamilton may regret his decision to join Mercedes in 2013.
Hamilton’s deal with the Woking based squad is going to expire at the conclusion of this season and he has signed a new three-year contract with the Brackley based team where he will drive as Nico Rosberg’s teammate from the next year onwards.
On the other hand, the seven-time world champion, Michael Schumacher has decided to take retirement at the end of this year.
Even though, the 2008 world champion said that he is looking forward to a fresh challenge and is aiming to take the Silver Arrows to new heights in the future. However, Whitmarsh thinks that the 27-year-old may regret his move to Mercedes which is presently
struggling with many reliability issues.
Furthermore, he said that he has worked with the British driver for quite a long time and has a very good affiliation with him. In addition, he said that it is going to be very hard for both of them to get separated at the end of this season.
“I hope he thinks today that he's made an awful mistake and I hope he thinks that next year,” Whitmarsh told Formula One's official website. “He's made that decision and he has to live with that decision. I have known him since he was 11 and worked with
him since his teens and I know we will both be very emotional after Brazil. We have had one or two emotional moments since the decision was taken and I believe, but you must ask him, that we have a very good relationship.”
Although, he said that he really respects Hamilton’s decision, but insisted that he would have come up even stronger in the coming year with them.
Besides, he asserted that they are a more competitive team and will fight hard for the title with their next year’s driver line-up which include, Jenson Button and Sergio Perez who is currently in Sauber.
It will be exciting to see how they perform in the remaining two grands prix of the ongoing season.
