Martin Whitmarsh believes Sergio Perez will face huge pressure in 2013 – Formula 1 news
McLaren team principal, Martin Whitmarsh believes that Sergio Perez will face huge pressure in 2013 of which he is not aware of yet.
Perez, who is presently in Sauber, has signed a new agreement with the Woking based team and will replace Lewis Hamilton to drive as Jenson Button’s teammate from the next year onwards.
On the other hand, Hamilton has decided to join Mercedes in the coming year and will replace Michael Schumacher who has planned to take retirement at the end of this season.
Even though, the Mexican driver has performed impressively well in the season so far and has secured three podium finishes. However, he has not been able to score even a single point after signing his new deal with the British squad.
Meanwhile, Whitmarsh has said that being a McLaren driver, the 22-year-old will have to face immense pressure in the next season.
Moreover, he said that the young driver is still oblivious of the fact that he will have enormous pressure on him, right from the first race of the coming season.
“Now when Sergio gets to Australia in 2013 he will arrive with the kind of pressure that he can't imagine right now,” he told the official F1 website. “If you are Ferrari or McLaren driver the scrutiny you are going to have is probably greater than Red Bull
driver and certainly more than Mercedes or any other team.”
“At the first race, if he is not on the first two rows and fighting for a win the pressure will start to ramp. He doesn't know that yet,” he said.
Nevertheless, he said that Perez has got some tremendous talent and surely stands amongst one of the most talented youngsters in the field.
In addition, he said that he is not worried about his decision regarding their next year’s driver line-up. Besides, he insisted that they are looking forward to prepare the Mexican and are aiming to attain competitive results in the next season.
“I am also not worried about him. We have the winter to prepare him,” he added.
It will be interesting to see how Perez performs in the next year with one of the most successful teams in the history of the sport.
