Martin Whitmarsh calls for quick solution to tyre issues after 2013 British GP – Formula 1 news
McLaren team principal, Martin Whitmarsh has said that Pirelli must propose the solution to the ongoing tyre issues as soon as possible.
Five Pirelli tyres burst during the British GP in Silverstone which raised safety concerns for the drivers. Furthermore, the debris which flung due to the bursting of tyres created a lot of problems for the drivers in the back.
Many teams have criticised this year’s Pirelli compound tyres and have asked for solution to ensure the safety of everyone in the sport. Meanwhile, the FIA has called the meeting on the coming Wednesday in which they have asked the Italian tyre company to
propose the required solution.
However, Whitmarsh has said that the issue must be resolved before the meeting of the Sporting Working Group.
“We've just got to say to Pirelli you should do whatever you can do by Germany,” he said. “I don't think Working Groups on Wednesday is the right approach. They [Pirelli] know what tyres they have in stock and what options they can practically do before
Germany and they should do whatever they can to enhance the safety and durability of the tyres.”
“I don't think you need a think tank or a Working Group to do that,” he said.
“The decision should be made this evening and in Formula One style you've got to respond urgently and as immediately as you can,” he added.
Furthermore, he said that they have been quite lucky that nobody was hurt due to the terrible incidents in the preceding race.
In addition, he said that 2012 tyres can prove out to be a reasonable and an easiest solution to the ongoing issue. He also said that the things must be resolved as quickly as possible so as to avoid any kind of problems in the German GP this weekend.
It is to be noted that Pirelli think McLaren driver Sergio Perez’s tyre burst was caused by a sidewall cut. In contrast, the Briton claims that the tyres must be able to at least bear these kinds of challenges on track so that the drivers can race safely.
