Martin Whitmarsh calls two tier engines unattractive – Formula 1 news
McLaren team principal, Martin Whitmarsh has not supported the idea of running two different kinds of engines in Formula 1 and has called the proposal as unattractive.
Whitmarsh said that running a V6s and V8s in 2014 seems quite practical. However, he said that personally he is not going to endorse the scheme. Moreover, he believes that it is not that attractive as they have learned from the past.
"It's feasible," he told Autosport. "I don't think it's an attractive thing to do, personally. Equivalence formulas, we have had it before, we had it in '88, we had turbos and normally aspirateds when we were coming the other way. It wasn't such a bad memory
for McLaren, but it wasn't an attractive formula."
Nevertheless, he said that the concept should be transformed into reality to see whether it provides the desired results or not. In addition, he said that there will be a strong need to change the rules and regulations so as to create a balance between the
two types of engines.
"I think you'd have to arrange, if you did it, such that the new turbo engines have advantage over normally aspirated, so you're creating a two-tier championship, which is I think not an attractive thing to have," he said.
The competition has been really tough amongst all the contenders and the current season has been very much unpredictable as almost every team has struggled with the change in FIA’s regulations with only few taking the advantage out of it.
At present, the Woking based team is standing at second place in the constructors’ championship with 193 points. Besides, they are just one point ahead of their main rival, Lotus.
Even though, they are quite behind Red Bull Racing who are currently leading the rankings with 246 points. Nevertheless, they are making the essential step ups and the significant developments so as to come up stronger in the remaining season.
Additionally, after struggling with the lack of downforce in few races, they have performed incredibly well in the last couple of grands prix. Let’s see how their drivers, Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button perform in the season ahead.
